Diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA) is the number one cause of death in children and adolescents living with T1D and 30-60% will present at diagnosis in this life-threatening crisis. While people diagnosed with T1D in adulthood are less likely to present in DKA, 42% are misclassified as having T2D and the risk for DKA increases with ongoing progression of pancreatic beta-cell failure. This session will discuss the who, what, when, where, and why of screening for T1D and the important role you as a CDCES have in supporting and empowering your patients with a positive autoantibody screening test.
