Do-It-Yourself Artificial Pancreas Systems (DIY APS) began in 2013 before the first commercially available hybrid closed insulin pump entered the United States market. Although DIY APS is not FDA approved, the American Diabetes Association recommends that healthcare professionals caring for individuals with diabetes know about DIY APS and support the person if they choose to utilize this method for taking insulin. It is estimated that between 10,000 and 30,000 people with diabetes are using a DIY APS despite several commercially available closed loop systems. This session discusses the history of DIY APS, how they work, and the advantages and disadvantages of using these systems.
