Individuals with diabetes face unique health challenges during childbearing phases of the life cycle. Diabetes adds nuance and complexity to personal decision making on critical reproductive topics surrounding fertility and reproductive life planning goals. Each encounter with an individual with childbearing potential is an opportunity for the diabetes care and education specialist to provide anticipatory guidance on reproductive-focused topics to support healthy future pregnancies, if desired, and long-term health and wellness. This presentation uses a case-based approach to apply an interprofessional lens to address evidence-based strategies that optimize health outcomes during the non-pregnancy phases (preconception, periconception, and interconception) of the childbearing periods of the reproductive life cycle.
